Who may be able to join
- Adults between 18 and 65 years of age.
- People who are scheduled to have a planned (non-emergency) surgery to remove a tumour inside the spinal canal, performed under general anaesthesia.
- People whose overall health before surgery falls within a range considered acceptable for this study, as rated by an anaesthesiologist on a standard scale (categories I, II, or III).
- People who are able to understand and fill out a standard questionnaire about anxiety and depression (called the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), as well as other study-related questionnaires.
- People who are willing to voluntarily sign a consent form agreeing to take part in the study.
- People who are right-handed.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People whose score on the anxiety part of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-A) is 8 or higher before surgery.
- People who have a history of mental health conditions (such as depression or psychosis), or who have taken medications that affect mood or mental health in the past 3 months.
- People who have a history of neurological conditions (such as epilepsy, stroke, or dementia), or who have had a serious head injury.
- People for whom the brain stimulation technique used in this study (called transcranial alternating current stimulation) would not be safe — for example, people who have metal implants in the head, gaps or defects in the skull, or a history of seizures.
- People who have a serious problem with their vision or hearing that makes communication difficult.
- People with severe heart or blood vessel disease affecting the heart or brain.
- People who have taken part in another clinical trial within the past 30 days.
- People who score below 15 on a standard test of memory and thinking ability called the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).
