Who may be able to join
- People aged 55 to 80 years, or aged 30 to 80 years if there is a documented family history of a gene mutation known to cause Alzheimer's disease passed down through generations.
- People who have been clinically diagnosed with either early-stage memory and thinking problems due to Alzheimer's disease, or mild Alzheimer's disease, confirmed by specific memory and thinking test scores within a set range.
- People with test results (such as brain scans or spinal fluid tests) showing the presence of abnormal proteins in the brain consistent with an Alzheimer's disease diagnosis.
- People who are otherwise in good general health, aside from their Alzheimer's disease diagnosis, as assessed by the study doctor.
- People who are taking an approved medication for Alzheimer's disease symptoms (such as certain memory medications) must have been on a stable dose for at least 8 weeks before the screening visit and continuing through the first study visit.
- People taking any other regular medications (not related to Alzheimer's disease) must have been on stable doses for at least 4 weeks before the screening visit and continuing through the first study visit.
- People who have a reliable and identified person (such as a family member or carer) who can act as a study partner throughout the trial.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People who have another medical, neurological, or psychiatric condition (other than Alzheimer's disease) that could affect thinking and memory, interfere with study results, or raise safety concerns.
- People whose blood tests at screening show antibodies against a specific virus used in gene therapy (AAV9).
- People who have had a mini-stroke, stroke, or an unexplained loss of consciousness within the past year.
- People with a history of seizures within the past 10 years, or a history of an epilepsy condition (except for childhood febrile seizures).
- People with a significant uncontrolled medical condition that could affect their safety or ability to complete all study requirements.
- People with a history of serious heart or blood vessel disease.
- People for whom lumbar puncture (spinal tap), MRI scans, PET scans, or steroid medications are medically not suitable.
- People who have tested positive for HIV, hepatitis C, or currently have active hepatitis B.
- People with a history of drug or alcohol misuse within the past year.
- People with a history of severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis (a serious, life-threatening allergic reaction).
- People who are currently using or have previously used an approved Alzheimer's disease treatment that targets the disease process itself (rather than just symptoms).
- People who have previously participated in, or are currently participating in, a clinical study involving cell or gene therapies, active immune therapies targeting Alzheimer's-related proteins, or certain other disease-modifying experimental treatments — unless it can be documented that the person only received a placebo in that study.
