Who may be able to join

  • People who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and whose HbA1c blood sugar level (a measure of average blood sugar over roughly 3 months) is between 7.0% and 10.5% at the screening appointment
  • People aged between 20 and 80 years old, of any gender
  • People who have been taking Metformin (at a dose of at least 500mg), with or without a blood sugar-lowering medicine from the DPP-4 inhibitor group (such as Sitagliptin, Vildagliptin, Saxagliptin, Linagliptin, Gemigliptin, Alogliptin, Teneligliptin, Anagliptin, or Evogliptin), for at least the past 3 months
  • People with a Body Mass Index (BMI, a measure calculated from height and weight) of 23 or above
  • People whose kidneys are functioning at a level measured as an eGFR of at least 60 ml/min/1.73m² (a standard test of kidney filtering ability)

Who may not be able to join

  • People who have Type 1 diabetes, gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy), or diabetes caused by another underlying condition
  • People who have had a serious heart or cardiovascular event in the 3 months before the screening visit
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who are not using contraception
  • People who have chronic Hepatitis B (unless they are a healthy carrier with no active disease) or Hepatitis C, or who have liver disease shown by certain liver enzyme levels being more than 3 times higher than the normal upper limit
  • People who have heart failure or a history of heart failure
  • People who have been diagnosed with cancer in the past 5 years (though people who have been fully treated for certain skin cancers or thyroid cancer may still be considered — confirm with trial site)
  • People who have taken part in another clinical trial within the past 30 days
  • People with alcohol addiction
  • People for whom the study medications Enavogliflozin or Pioglitazone are considered medically unsuitable or contraindicated
  • People who are currently taking other diabetes medications (including insulin or other blood sugar-lowering tablets) or other experimental drugs
  • People considered unsuitable for the trial based on the medical team's assessment
