Who may be able to join
- Men and women (who are not pregnant) between the ages of 45 and 80 at the time of joining the trial.
- People who are able and willing to provide their informed consent to participate.
- People who have been diagnosed with probable idiopathic (no known cause) Parkinson's disease based on United Kingdom Parkinson's Disease criteria, confirmed through a Level II Movement Disorder clinical diagnosis, and who score 9 or below on the FAQ (a measure of daily functioning).
- People who, if taking medication for Parkinson's disease or any other health condition, have been on a stable dose for at least 4 weeks before the screening visit.
- People who are willing to avoid receiving deep brain stimulation (DBS) or any other approved or experimental surgical or medical treatment for Parkinson's disease for the duration of the study.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People who cannot have MRI scans due to having certain implanted devices or metal in the body (such as pacemakers, medication pumps, aneurysm clips, metal prostheses, heart valves, cochlear implants, or metal fragments in the eye), or who experience discomfort in small, enclosed spaces (claustrophobia).
- People who have an active or ongoing infection or inflammation.
- People who have any current or past bleeding in the brain, including small bleeds visible on certain scans or larger bleeds.
- People who have a tumour or any growth taking up space anywhere in the brain.
- People who are unable or unwilling to lie flat and remain still for the length of the treatment session (approximately 2 to 3 hours).
- People where more than 30% of the area of the skull along the treatment pathway is affected by scarring, scalp conditions (such as eczema), scalp thinning, or has implanted objects in the skull or brain.
- People with a known unstable heart condition or high blood pressure that is not well controlled.
- People with a history of any significant neurological condition or brain procedure (such as brain surgery for Parkinson's disease, brain tumours, uncontrolled epilepsy, or other conditions considered significant by the study doctor).
- People who have previously had deep brain stimulation or a surgical procedure to destroy tissue in specific areas of the brain (the basal ganglia or thalamus).
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial with an active treatment, or who have received any experimental treatment (drug, biologic, or device) within 3 months before the screening visit.
- People who are taking medications that, in the study doctor's judgement, could affect thinking and memory, increase the risk of side effects, or interfere with the ability to complete cognitive tests or study procedures.
