Who may be able to join
- People between the ages of 46 and 85 years old
- People who have been diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (Parkinson's that has no known cause) according to recognised international diagnostic guidelines
- People whose Parkinson's disease severity falls within a certain range on a standard rating scale (Hoehn & Yahr score of 4 or below)
- People whose Parkinson's disease mainly affects walking and balance, rather than tremor (known as the PIGD phenotype — confirm with trial site if unsure which type applies)
- People whose Parkinson's medication has remained unchanged for at least 4 weeks before joining and throughout the 28-week study period
- People who do not have dementia, as determined by a specific assessment tool, and who score 24 or above on a standard memory and thinking test (MMSE)
- People who do not have significant tremor or involuntary movements that would interfere with brain scan (MRI) results
- People who are willing and able to provide written and verbal agreement to take part in the study
For healthy volunteers (comparison group):
- People who are a similar age (within approximately 15 years of the average age of Parkinson's participants) and the same sex as the Parkinson's participants
- People who are willing and able to provide written and verbal agreement to take part
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People with major ongoing conditions affecting the body's systems, mental health, nervous system, vision, or muscles and bones, or any other condition that affects their ability to walk
- People with medical conditions or a history of substance use that could affect thinking or memory
- People who have a pacemaker or any other implanted device that stimulates the brain or nerves in the head or neck area
- People who have any other reason they cannot safely have an MRI scan
- People whose routine brain scan shows brain damage, including significant damage to blood vessels in the brain
- People who do not agree to provide written and verbal consent to participate
- People who have significant wounds, scars, or skin conditions on the scalp that could raise the risk of infection or affect how a non-invasive brain stimulation device works safely (this applies only to participants receiving the stimulation treatment)
