Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People currently being treated with insulin.
  • People currently being treated with certain blood sugar-lowering medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists or DPP-4 inhibitors (confirm with trial site if unsure whether a medication falls into these categories).
  • People who have experienced serious diabetes-related emergencies — such as diabetic ketoacidosis, lactic acidosis, hyperosmolar coma, or repeated severe low blood sugar episodes — in the past year.
  • People who have one or more serious long-term diabetes complications, including advanced damage to the eyes from diabetes, high levels of protein in the urine, or significantly reduced kidney function.
  • People who have had a serious heart or blood vessel event — such as a heart attack, heart stent procedure, unstable chest pain, heart failure, or a stroke or brain bleed — in the past 6 months.
  • People who have been diagnosed with active stomach or intestinal conditions (such as ulcers), thyroid problems, poorly controlled high blood pressure, active cancer that is not in remission, or other life-threatening illnesses.
  • People who have used antibiotics, probiotics, or prebiotics in the past 3 weeks, or who need to use them long-term.
  • People whose medications are not stable, or who are taking prescription medications that affect the body's metabolism (such as thyroid hormones or steroids like glucocorticoids).
  • People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
  • People who have a pacemaker or metal implants in their body, who experience claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), or who have any other reason they cannot undergo an fMRI scan.
  • People with a psychiatric condition that would make it difficult to cooperate with the study.
  • People who are unlikely to be able to follow the trial requirements reliably.
  • People who are currently participating in another clinical trial, or who have participated in one within the past 4 weeks.
