Who may be able to join
For people with Parkinson's disease who experience freezing of gait (sudden inability to move feet while walking):
- A doctor has diagnosed the person with Parkinson's disease using a standard set of medical criteria called the UK Brain Bank criteria
- The person's Parkinson's disease is rated at a moderate stage (stages 2 to 3 on a standard scale) when their Parkinson's medication is working
- The person reports episodes of freezing of gait based on a standard questionnaire, with a score indicating frequent freezing episodes
For people with Parkinson's disease who do NOT experience freezing of gait:
- A doctor has diagnosed the person with Parkinson's disease using the UK Brain Bank criteria
- The person's Parkinson's disease is rated at a moderate stage (stages 2 to 3 on a standard scale) when their Parkinson's medication is working
For all participants (including age-matched people without Parkinson's disease):
- Adults between 40 and 80 years of age
- Able to walk for 10 minutes at the start of the study
- Able to give informed consent to participate
- Able to read and write in English at approximately a Year 8 school level
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

- People who use shoe inserts or foot supports that are not compatible with the special haptic (vibrating) shoes used in the trial
- People with serious balance problems or who are falling every day at the start of the study
- People with dementia who score below 18 on a standard memory and thinking test (called the MoCA) and are therefore not able to give informed consent for the study
- People who are pregnant
