Who may be able to join

  • People who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease using recognised medical diagnostic criteria, and who have already had a specific Medtronic brain stimulation device (called Percept DBS) with directional leads surgically placed in a particular area of the brain on both sides (called the globus pallidus internus or GPi).
  • People who are able to walk inside without any assistance.
  • People aged 18 or older.
  • Half of the study places are for people who experience a disabling symptom called "freezing of gait" (a sudden inability to move the feet while walking) more than once per day, based on their own answers to a standard questionnaire.
  • The other half of the study places are for people who do not experience freezing of gait at all, based on their own answers to the same standard questionnaire.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who have a clinical diagnosis of dementia or severe difficulties with thinking and memory (as measured by a standard cognitive test with a score below 21).
  • People who have a history of stroke, traumatic brain injury, or any other neurological condition in addition to Parkinson's disease.
  • People who have other health conditions that cause serious problems with walking.
  • People who have had an unstable medical condition, including heart or blood vessel instability, within the past six months.
  • People who are unable or unwilling to take part in and complete the required testing involved in the study.
