Who may be able to join
- People aged 18 or older at the time of signing the consent form, of any gender.
- People who have been taking a stable daily dose of metformin (at least 1,500 mg per day, or the highest dose they can tolerate which must be at least 1,000 mg per day) for at least 90 days before screening — either metformin alone, or metformin combined with one type of SGLT-2 inhibitor medication.
- People whose HbA1c (a blood test that measures average blood sugar levels over the past few months) is between 7.5% and 11.0%.
- People with a BMI (body mass index) of 23 or above.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People with very high blood pressure that is not well controlled — specifically, a top (systolic) reading of 160 mmHg or higher, or a bottom (diastolic) reading of 100 mmHg or higher, whether or not they are taking blood pressure medication.
- People who have been diagnosed with, or are suspected of having, type 1 diabetes, or certain other specific or secondary forms of diabetes.
- People with a history of significant blood disorders (such as sickle cell disease, a type of anaemia where red blood cells break down, or certain bone marrow conditions) or other conditions that affect red blood cell stability (such as malaria or an enlarged spleen).
- People with a hormonal (endocrine) condition or history of one that could significantly affect body weight — for example, Cushing's syndrome or an overactive or underactive thyroid, unless the underactive thyroid has been treated with a stable medication dose for at least 6 months.
- People who have had a serious infection, serious injury, or a moderate-to-major surgical procedure within the 4 weeks before screening.
- People who have taken part in a clinical trial of a drug or medical device within the 12 weeks before screening (defined as having signed a consent form and used a trial drug — including a placebo — or trial device), or who are still within 5 half-lives of a previous trial drug (whichever period is longer) (confirm with trial site).
