Who may be able to join

  • The trial is looking for 120 participants in total — 60 Chinese Americans and 60 Vietnamese Americans.
  • Adults aged 18 or older who live independently in the community.
  • People who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
  • People whose HbA1c (a blood sugar measure taken over roughly 3 months) is above 7.0%.
  • People who identify as first- or second-generation Chinese or Vietnamese immigrants.
  • People who are able to communicate in English, Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese), or Vietnamese.
  • People who own a smartphone, iPad, tablet, or Apple Watch.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who are taking certain diabetes medications — such as insulin or sulfonylureas — that can cause low blood sugar and require close monitoring.
  • People who have taken medications that can make weight loss harder (for example, prednisone) at any point in the last 3 months.
  • People who are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant within the next 6 months.
  • People who have serious physical health conditions such as severe nerve damage, heart disease, severe lung disease, severe joint disease, or who have had a stroke — or who have serious mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, or active substance use problems.
  • People who have conditions that affect what they can eat, such as severe stomach-emptying problems, ulcers, or significant food allergies.
  • People who are currently receiving cancer treatment.
  • People who have significant kidney disease (confirm with trial site for specific kidney function levels).
  • People who are taking certain psychiatric medications known to raise blood sugar levels (such as some antipsychotic medicines).
  • People who have previously used or are currently using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) device — such as Dexcom or FreeStyle Libre — and plan to keep using one over the next 6 months.
  • People who are currently taking part in another type 2 diabetes treatment study.
