Who may be able to join
- Adults between 35 and 90 years of age who have swallowing difficulties
- People who have been diagnosed with, or are suspected of having, Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease (either the tremor-dominant or rigidity-dominant type)
- People whose Parkinson's disease disability level has been rated as Stage II or III on the Hoehn & Yahr scale in their most recent neurology assessment
- People who have a swallowing concern confirmed by a recognised swallowing assessment tool (confirm with trial site)
- People who are still able to eat and drink by mouth (confirmed by a standard food intake assessment score)
- People who are able to walk independently
- People whose Parkinson's medications have not changed in the four weeks before joining the study
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People whose Parkinson's disease disability has been rated as Stage IV on the Hoehn & Yahr scale
- People who are unable to follow a two-step instruction
- People who have another neurological condition that may also cause swallowing difficulties
- People who have been diagnosed with dementia, as determined by standard cognitive assessment scores
- People experiencing severe depression, as measured by a standard depression assessment tool
- People with severe uncontrolled movement of the head and neck that would interfere with swallowing imaging tests
- People with a serious diagnosed gastrointestinal (digestive tract) disease
- People who have had surgery on the stomach or oesophagus (food pipe)
- People who have a history of head or neck cancer that has affected swallowing, or who have had surgical treatment in that area
- People with a history of breathing conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that require assisted breathing support
- People with untreated high blood pressure
- People with heart disease that requires them to limit physical activity and receive ongoing medical management
- People who have received speech therapy for swallowing difficulties within the past three months
- Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who plan to become pregnant during the study period
