Who may be able to join

  • People who have a confirmed clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease.
  • People whose Parkinson's Disease is rated as mild to moderate severity (Stage 3 or below on a standard scale used by doctors to measure balance and disability).
  • People who are able to walk on their own for around 5 minutes, with or without walking poles.
  • People aged between 18 and 80 years.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who have any condition that means spinal manipulation or mobilisation by a practitioner is not considered safe for them.
  • People with a history of spinal cancer (whether the tumour was non-cancerous or cancerous), an active spinal infection such as tuberculosis, severe birth-related spinal defects, or a spinal fracture or dislocation that is still healing.
  • People diagnosed with severe softening of the bones (a condition called osteomalacia) or severe rheumatoid arthritis, due to the risk these conditions pose to joint and ligament stability.
  • People with evidence of spinal cord compression, a condition called Cauda Equina syndrome, or other serious conditions affecting the nervous system that cause spinal instability or loss of sensation (and that are not related to Parkinson's Disease).
  • People with a history of problems with the main artery in the body (such as an abdominal aortic aneurysm), severe haemophilia, or unmanaged blood-clotting disorders that cause bleeding into the joints.
