Who may be able to join
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
- People whose HbA1c (a blood test that shows average blood sugar levels over the past few months) is between 6.5% and 12.0%
- People whose fasting C-peptide level (a blood test that shows whether the pancreas is still producing insulin) is 0.5 ng/ml or above, measured at the screening visit
Who may not be able to join

- People who are currently using insulin
- People who have a form of diabetes other than typical type 2, such as latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) or a genetic form called maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY)
- People whose kidneys are not functioning well enough, based on a blood test called eGFR falling below a certain level (confirm with trial site)
- People who have had a heart attack in the past 6 months, or who have severe or unstable heart failure
- People who are currently taking weight loss medication, including a class of diabetes or weight loss injections such as semaglutide or dulaglutide
- People who have had a change in the dose of a long-term medication that could affect the study results within the past 3 months
- People with significantly abnormal results on routine blood tests, such as unusual haemoglobin levels
- People with serious digestive conditions, a history of major stomach or bowel surgery, or gallstones
- People with serious disease affecting the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, liver, lungs, adrenal glands, or nervous system, where participation could raise safety concerns or affect study results
- People who have had cancer (other than a common type of skin cancer called non-melanoma skin cancer) within the past 5 years
- People who have lost or gained more than 5 pounds — or more than 2% of their body weight if they weigh over 250 pounds — in the past 2 months
- People who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant within the next 6 months, or currently breastfeeding
- People with a serious psychiatric condition that could affect their ability to take part in the study
- People who are unable to eat the meals provided as part of the study, for example due to food allergies
- People whose lifestyle or personal circumstances may make it difficult to follow the study's dietary plan
- People who are unable to have an MRI scan, for example due to claustrophobia, metal implants in the body, or body size (confirm with trial site)
