Who may be able to join
- People who are aged 50 years or older.
- People who have been diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease according to a specific set of clinical diagnostic criteria (the Movement Disorder Society 2015 guidelines), with a disease severity rating between stage 1 and stage 4 on a standard scale called Hoehn & Yahr.
- People whose Parkinson's disease was diagnosed at least 2 years ago, whose condition is currently stable, and who are able to take part in the study's assessments and activities.
- People who have also been diagnosed with insomnia disorder according to a standard mental health diagnostic guide (DSM-5), and who score 15 or higher on a standard insomnia questionnaire called the Insomnia Severity Index.
- People who have been on the same medication regimen for at least 4 weeks before the study begins.
- People who have signed a consent form agreeing to take part, either themselves or through a legal guardian, after being given the opportunity to understand what the study involves.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People who have a history of, or have been diagnosed with, a serious psychiatric condition such as depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder.
- People who have a diagnosed neurological condition (assessed by self-report), including conditions that may raise pressure in the brain, brain tumours, a history of stroke, a mini-stroke within the past 2 years, a brain aneurysm, dementia, or multiple sclerosis.
- People with significant memory or thinking difficulties, indicated by a score below 24 on a standard cognitive test called the Mini-Mental State Examination, or people who are unable to complete questionnaires on their own.
- People who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (a long-term lung condition also known as COPD), or any history of breathing problems during sleep, such as sleep apnea.
- People who nap during the day for 1 hour or more, on 3 or more days per week.
- People who regularly consume caffeine.
- People who have used any medication that acts on orexin receptors (a type of brain signalling system) in the past 3 months.
- People who have a history of cataplexy (sudden muscle weakness) or who are known to have low orexin levels.
- People who are unable to read or understand Chinese.
- People who have used any other sleep-promoting medications in the past 3 months.
