Who may be able to join

  • People who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes for at least 12 weeks, and who have been on a stable dose of metformin (either alone or combined with a type of diabetes medication called an SGLT2 inhibitor) for at least 12 weeks before the screening visit.
  • People whose blood sugar control measure (called HbA1c, a 3-month average blood sugar test) falls within a specific range — at least 7.5% but no more than 11.0% at the first screening visit, and at least 7.0% but no more than 11.0% at a later check before joining the trial.
  • People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 22.5 or higher (BMI is a number calculated from height and weight).

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who have a type of diabetes other than Type 2 Diabetes.
  • People who experienced a serious diabetes-related emergency (such as diabetic ketoacidosis, lactic acidosis, or a severe high-blood-sugar crisis) within the 24 weeks before signing the consent form.

  • People with a personal or family history of a specific type of thyroid cancer (medullary thyroid carcinoma), abnormal thyroid cell growth, or a hereditary condition called multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2.
  • People with a history of pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis), either sudden or long-term; those with known risk factors for pancreatitis; or those who had gallbladder problems requiring treatment within the 24 weeks before signing the consent form.
  • People who have a condition affecting how their stomach empties or how their gut absorbs food — such as having had weight-loss surgery or stomach surgery, irritable bowel syndrome, persistent indigestion, or a condition called gastroparesis (slow stomach emptying).
  • People who have used diabetes medications other than metformin or an SGLT2 inhibitor in the 12 weeks before signing the consent form (a short course of insulin lasting 7 days or fewer for illness, stress, or surgery is an exception).
  • People whose blood haemoglobin level (a measure of red blood cell health) is below 100 g/L (for women) or below 110 g/L (for men).
  • People whose fasting blood sugar level is 13.9 mmol/L or higher.
  • People with liver enzyme levels (AST or ALT) more than three times the upper limit of the normal range.
  • People with a total bilirubin level (a liver-related measure) more than one and a half times the upper limit of the normal range.
