Who may be able to join

  • Children from birth up to (but not including) 18 years old, of any gender.
  • Children who have a medical need for keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery on the chest or abdomen, and who are healthy enough to undergo that type of surgery.
  • A parent or legal guardian has given written permission for the child to take part; if the child is old enough to understand, their agreement is also obtained.

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • Children who have had previous keyhole or open surgery at the area being treated, and who the doctor considers unsuitable for keyhole surgery as a result.
  • Children who have an infection in the chest, abdomen, or pelvis, inflammation of the abdominal lining, a hole in the diaphragm, or a serious whole-body infection, and who the doctor considers unsuitable for keyhole surgery as a result.
  • Children who have serious problems with blood clotting or bleeding, including abnormal clotting test results, or who take blood-thinning or anti-clotting medications that have not been stopped for at least one week before surgery (routine low-dose blood-thinning injections are not included in this exclusion).
  • Children with severe heart or circulation problems that make surgery unsafe.
  • Children who have epilepsy or significant difficulties with thinking or understanding.
  • Children where drug addiction is suspected or confirmed.
  • Children who are pregnant.
  • Children who have taken part in another medical device trial within the past month, or a medication trial within the past three months.
  • Children where, during surgery, findings such as severe internal scarring, unusual anatomy, or poor visibility make keyhole surgery unsafe to continue.
  • Children who the doctor considers unsuitable for any other reason (confirm with trial site).
