Who may be able to join

For the first family member identified (called the "proband"):

  • People who were seen at the Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk Evaluation Clinic or the Cancer Genetics Clinic at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center within the past year, and who tested positive for a hereditary breast and ovarian cancer gene change (BRCA1 or BRCA2), or Lynch Syndrome gene change (MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, PMS2, or EPCAM), or received an unclear or uncertain result
  • If more than one biological family member has been tested, the one who was tested the longest time ago would be considered the "proband" for this trial, in line with the National Cancer Institute's definition
  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who have completed genetic testing for hereditary cancer risk, regardless of what the results showed
  • People who are able to speak and read English
  • People who have access to the internet
  • People who identify as African American or Black (people with additional racial or ethnic identities may also be eligible)

For biological relatives of the enrolled proband:

  • Biological family members of a proband who has already been enrolled in the trial, regardless of whether the relative has had genetic testing or when that testing took place
  • People aged 18 or older
  • People who are able to speak and read English
  • People who have access to the internet

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

For the first family member identified (called the "proband"):

  • People who were not seen at a University of Michigan clinic, or whose clinic visit was more than one year ago, or who were seen more recently than another biological relative who was also evaluated
  • People under 18 years old
  • People who did not receive cancer genetic testing
  • People who do not speak or read English
  • People who do not have access to the internet
  • People who do not identify as African American or Black

For biological relatives:

  • People who are not a biological relative of an enrolled proband
  • People under 18 years old
  • People who do not speak or read English
  • People who do not have access to the internet
