Who may be able to join

  • People aged between 30 and 80 years old.
  • People who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) based on recognised international diagnostic guidelines (Movement Disorders Society criteria).
  • People whose Parkinson's disease is at a mild to moderate stage, rated between 1 and 3 on a standard scale used to measure disease progression (Hoehn & Yahr stage).
  • The trial is looking to include 10 people whose Parkinson's disease is linked to a specific gene change (LRRK2) and 10 people with Parkinson's disease not linked to a known genetic cause — all participants will have had genetic testing done using specialist methods (NGS panel and MLPA).
  • People who are able to understand and agree to take part in the trial by giving informed consent.

Who may not be able to join

  • People who have, or have previously had, other conditions affecting the brain or nervous system.
  • People who currently have an infection, or who have had one within the past 4 weeks.
  • People who have regularly taken anti-inflammatory medicines (such as ibuprofen or similar) or steroid medicines for at least 1 week during the past 12 weeks.
  • People who currently have, or within the past 3 years have had, cancer, or a condition where the immune system attacks the body or causes ongoing inflammation.
  • People who have a problem with alcohol or drug misuse or dependence.
  • People who have any reason they cannot safely have an MRI scan, including fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia).
