- People whose kidneys are not filtering blood well enough, based on a specific kidney function measurement falling below 30 mL/min.
- People with elevated liver enzyme levels (ALT) more than three times the normal upper limit.
- People with elevated liver enzyme levels (AST) more than three times the normal upper limit.
- People with liver cirrhosis (serious scarring of the liver).
- People who drink more than 20 grams of alcohol per day (for women) or more than 30 grams per day (for men).
- People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant during the study.
- People who currently have haemorrhoids or piles that are causing rectal bleeding when passing a stool.
- People who are currently using steroid medications taken by mouth or injection (systemic steroids).
- People who are currently using insulin.
- People who are currently using weight-loss medications, including GLP-1 receptor agonist injections or tablets, orlistat, or phentermine.
- People who have used antibiotics, prebiotics, probiotics, vitamin C supplements, or traditional Chinese medicine within the past month.
- People with thyroid disease that is not well controlled.
- People for whom there are concerns about being able to follow the study requirements, such as those with dementia, substance use issues, a history of missing appointments, or family concerns about taking part.
