Who may be able to join
- Adults aged 18 or older at the time of screening.
- People who have at least one of the following metabolic conditions: a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) of 23 or above; a waist measurement of 80 cm or more (for women) or 90 cm or more (for men); a fasting blood sugar or average blood sugar level in a range that suggests pre-diabetes; high triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood) above a certain level; or a documented history of high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, or diabetes.
- People who meet at least one of the following signs of chronic kidney disease: kidney filtering function (measured by a blood test called eGFR) between 15 and below 60; or a high level of a protein called albumin in the urine (above a certain threshold) with relatively preserved kidney filtering function and a documented history of this protein being in the urine.
- People who have documented cardiovascular disease caused by hardening or narrowing of the arteries, in at least one of these forms: heart-related — a previous heart attack, a procedure to open or bypass blocked heart arteries, or a confirmed significant narrowing (50% or more) of a major heart artery; brain-related — a previous stroke caused by artery disease, a procedure on the carotid artery in the neck, or confirmed significant narrowing of a carotid artery; or narrowing of arteries in the legs or other limbs causing symptoms.
- People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form to take part in the study.
Who may not be able to join
Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.
- People who have signs of an active infection, or where the study doctor suspects one may be present.
- People who have had a heart attack, stroke, a brief stroke-like episode (TIA), or a hospital stay for severe chest pain within the 60 days before joining the study.
- People who have a planned procedure to open or bypass blocked arteries (in the heart, neck, or limbs) at the time of joining the study.
- People who have had major heart surgery, major non-heart surgery, or a major internal camera procedure within the 60 days before joining, or who have such a procedure planned during the study.
- People currently taking medicines that suppress the immune system, such as steroids, certain targeted therapies, biologic medicines used for immune conditions, or anti-cancer drugs.
- People who are on long-term regular kidney dialysis (either hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis).
- People with a current or past history of active tuberculosis (TB).
- People with a history of inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis).
- People who have had an active cancer or early-stage cancer (carcinoma in situ) within the past five years.
- People with very high blood pressure that is not controlled (top number above 180 mmHg or bottom number above 110 mmHg).
- People with severe heart failure classified as the most serious category (NYHA Class IV), meaning significant symptoms even at rest.
- People who have had a bone marrow or organ transplant in the past, or who have a transplant planned during the study period.
- People with a known or suspected allergy to the study drug (secukinumab) or any of its ingredients.
- People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who are capable of becoming pregnant and are not using an adequate form of contraception.
- People whose blood test results show low levels of certain white blood cells or platelets, or elevated liver enzyme levels above a certain threshold.
- People whose long-term average blood sugar level (HbA1c) is 10% or above, indicating poorly controlled diabetes.
- People with any other health condition that the study doctor believes could put them at risk or make it difficult to follow the study requirements.
- People who, in the study doctor's judgment, are not receiving an adequate standard level of treatment for their condition.
