Who may be able to join

  • Adults aged 18 or older, of any gender
  • People who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for at least 3 months, based on Chinese national diabetes guidelines
  • People who have also been diagnosed with a liver condition called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), confirmed through liver blood tests, an ultrasound, and other non-invasive liver assessments, with other liver diseases ruled out
  • People who are willing to take part and sign a written consent form
  • People who are able to attend an initial assessment and follow-up appointments over time, are expected to remain living in the study area during the follow-up period, and do not have severe memory or movement problems that would make participation difficult

Who may not be able to join

Each point below is a reason the trial team may not be able to accept someone. It is not a list of requirements to meet.

  • People who have another chronic liver disease at the same time, such as hepatitis B or C, liver disease caused by alcohol, autoimmune liver disease, medication-related liver injury, liver cirrhosis, or liver cancer
  • People who have a serious heart or stroke condition, advanced kidney disease (stage 5), cancer, a severe infection, or any other condition that means life expectancy is estimated to be less than 5 years
  • People currently taking certain medications that significantly affect how the liver or blood sugar works — other than standard diabetes, cholesterol, or liver-support medications — where those medications cannot be adjusted (confirm with trial site)
  • Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant in the near future
  • People with a serious mental health condition or severe memory problems that would prevent them from completing surveys and follow-up visits
  • People who are unwilling to sign a consent form or are unable to follow the study procedures
