Ankylosing Spondylitis
Plain English clinical trial information, updated daily from ClinicalTrials.gov and public government registries. Not medical advice.
How these figures are counted
- Trials on record is every trial tagged to this condition at any stage, except those withdrawn before starting or terminated early. Most are completed rather than ongoing, so this is a measure of research history, not of current activity. It is also smaller than the sitewide "trials tracked" figure, which does include withdrawn and terminated trials.
- Recruiting now counts only trials whose registry status is "Recruiting". Trials listed as not yet recruiting or enrolling by invitation are excluded, so this understates how many may open to new participants soon.
- Australian sites counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that list at least one Australian site. A site being listed does not mean it is currently enrolling, and Australian trials registered only on ANZCTR are not counted yet, so this understates local availability.
- Phase 3 trials counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that are at Phase 3.

Understanding Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of inflammatory arthritis that mainly affects the spine and the joints connecting the spine to the pelvis, known as the sacroiliac joints. In AS, the immune system mistakenly causes inflammation in these areas, which can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced movement, particularly in the lower back. Over time and without management, some people find that the inflammation causes new bone to form, which can gradually fuse sections of the spine together. Symptoms often start in early adulthood, and many people notice that stiffness is worse after rest or in the morning and tends to ease with gentle movement.
In Australia, AS is estimated to affect around one in 200 people, making it more common than many people realise. It was historically thought to affect men more than women, though it is now understood that women are also significantly affected, sometimes with slightly different symptoms that can make diagnosis less straightforward. There is often a strong genetic link, with a gene marker called HLA-B27 present in many people with the condition, though not everyone who carries this gene will develop AS.
Treatment in Australia is generally overseen by a rheumatologist and tends to focus on reducing inflammation, managing pain, and maintaining as much movement and function as possible. Physiotherapy and regular exercise are considered important parts of managing the condition. Medications commonly used include anti-inflammatory drugs, and for people whose symptoms do not respond well to these, there are other medication options available through the PBS. Regular check-ins with a healthcare team allow treatment to be adjusted over time based on how the condition is progressing.

These medicines are listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for the specific indications shown. A listing does not mean a medicine is right for you; your doctor decides what is appropriate. Prices shown are the PBS-determined dispensed price. Most patients pay only the standard co-payment, up to AU$25.00 per script (general) or AU$7.70 (concession or Safety Net) in 2026, with the Australian Government subsidising the rest.
